Screening for anxiety could be part of doctor visits

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) — Screening for anxiety can be part of a regular checkup when you see your doctor.

For the first time, the US Task Force on Preventive Services has recommended that primary care physicians screen adults for anxiety even if they have no symptoms. This could start happening as early as next month.

Officials say Covid has caused an increase in mental health issues for people, including anxiety.

Symptoms of anxiety can include chest pain, insomnia, or difficulty breathing.

“If people are screened for some of these various things that I’ve mentioned, they can determine if it’s actually anxiety, and then they can be taken to the right area, whether it’s behavioral health or can -even be treated as part of their primary care,” said Tina O’Neil, director of mental health services, Samaritan Medical Center.

Screening for anxiety usually comes in the form of a questionnaire from your doctor.
