Faridkot, September 21

The National Medical Commission (CNM) has today requested all Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) to complete their mandatory 12-month rotating internship at institutions approved by the State Medical Commissions only.

The autonomous institutions are not affiliated with any of the universities under the provisions of the UGC law, but they provide education through regular courses or through open and distance learning systems.

In issuing a clarification on the internship of foreign medical graduates and the allocation of medical schools to them, the NMC indicated that state medical boards are required to allocate seats to foreign students, who have qualified the examination of foreign medical graduates (FMGE), in medical faculties only. Foreign medical graduates can first be assigned to colleges, which have just opened and have not yet been recognized.

State medical boards must ensure that applicants applying for internship completion must have passed the FMGE – a licensing exam conducted by the National Examinations Board.

The maximum quota for the allocation of internships to foreign medical graduates is limited to an additional 7.5% of the total number of authorized places in a medical school. There are allegations that some private medical institutes charge foreign medical graduate students a fee to allow them to do an internship, which is in violation of NMC rules.

The NMC, however, said a stipend and other facilities, equivalent to those provided to local medical graduates trained in government colleges, should be extended to overseas medical graduates.
