The internet is once again speculating about the Nintendo Switch 2

It wouldn’t be a normal day on the internet if we didn’t have some sort of speculation about the successor to the Nintendo Switch. We have to say though that the information coming out today is quite interesting. An NVIDIA employee has confirmed that the Tegra239 chip rumored to feature on the Switch’s successor is, in fact, real. The news comes from a Redditor who picked up the information from linux.org.

The Tegra239 has been rumored before but never confirmed so far. This new chip would be customized for the Switch, taking over from the current SoC, called Tegra X1. An SoC is a system-on-chip, which means that most, if not all, of the device’s components are kept on that chip. The confirmation of this chip also mentions that the CPU will have eight cores.

This next generation of Nintendo hardware from NVIDIA has already been mentioned in the infamous NVIDIA Leaks. “NVN2”, apparently a code name for a Switch successor, is said to have an Ampere-based GPU capable of DLSS and ray tracing. While ray tracing sounds incredibly ambitious for a handheld device, DLSS would be a game changer.

Nvidia DLSS graphics
NVIDIA’s DLSS technology can increase resolution and frame rates on compatible devices.

DLSS (acronym for Deep Learning super sampling) is NVIDIA’s AI upscaling technology that boosts low-quality images to higher resolutions. This allows the hardware to run a game at low settings with minimal system load, and for that image to be AI-enhanced to output at a higher resolution. This technology would go a long way for a Nintendo console, which lately is weaker than its Xbox and PlayStation counterparts.

As always, a rumored Switch successor should be taken with a grain of salt. Whether it’s a Switch 2 or a Switch Pro, the mutterings of an announcement have been rampant online in recent years, but it never happens. This latest news appears to be true and makes no unsubstantiated promises of an imminent release. Either way, have your oversized shoes and red clown nose handy, just in case.
