Memorial Health System to Establish Graduate Medical Education Program

The Memorial Health System received initial accreditation to establish its graduate medical training program in internal medicine.

GME begins after students graduate from medical school with a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine.

The program responds to a growing call to increase residency programs in Mississippi. At present, the state ranks 49e to have 65.9 active primary care doctors per 100,000 inhabitants.

Applications for the program will be available online through a medical school program and Memorial will begin interviewing applicants in the coming weeks. Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program Dr. Wayne Latack said, “We want to improve the health of our community. It’s really hard to do when you don’t have the doctors to do it. So it’s to bring the pipeline. It’s about bringing in these new young minds and young doctors to train them in internal medicine.

Residents will begin rotations on July 1st2023.
