The Iowa Department of Education provides grants to 10 school districts in Iowa, including the Muscatine School District.

MUSCATINE, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Education has awarded grants to 10 Iowa school districts, including Muscatine.

The grants are for COVID response and recovery initiatives targeting social, emotional, and behavioral health. The Muscatine School District received $100,000 after applying for the grant last week. They received the good news this weekend.

“We were fortunate to secure a grant through Iowa grant.gov and the Department of Education, for mental health and social-emotional learning,” said Jaime Kroeger, director of human resources and equity Muscatine schools.

Muscatine schools received the highest grant amount among the 10 districts. All proceeds will go towards COVID recovery training for students and staff.

“Post-pandemic has really brought to light the need for social-emotional learning and coping skills, it was there before the pandemic, but it really brought it to the fore,” said Paige Williams, specialist in social, emotional and behavioral health. for muscatine schools.

Trustees say staff’s response to the grant has been successful.

“So based on the feedback I received on Friday, it was overwhelmingly positive. Again, he’s a very engaging speaker. And I think our staff knows this is important work, and they are thrilled to have access to this learning, says Williams.

For training, the Muscatine School District works with Kurt Slater and “Till 360”, a social and emotional consulting firm for initial training. Directors say they have enjoyed working with Slater so far.

“Like he’s given some of the best professional learning I think many of us have seen. But he’s very knowledgeable about…the social and emotional side of things, and what our students and staff need to be successful,” says Williams.

The District begins training this week and is very proud to have had this opportunity.
