WCU Hosts First Rural Health Summit

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – Doctors from across Mississippi have gathered with medical students from William Carey University for a first-ever rural health care conference.

Organizers of the first Rural Health Summit at WCU hope it will improve care in areas such as diabetes and mental health.

The event started on Friday evening and ended on Saturday afternoon.

“Most of our state is rural and the issues that we face in rural America (are) different from what we’re going to face in urban areas, so it’s important to set the table to have that kind of conversation,” said Italo Subbarao, dean of WCU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The summit included presentations by various physicians. Over a dozen different presentations and workshops took place during the event.

“Whether I’m learning about differences in health care, socio-economic status, I think all of those factors play a very big role in health care, and that’s what we learned here at the summit. “, said Monica Daswani.

It also included practical workshops.

“Conferences like this really expose or highlight the importance of bringing in expertise and sharing it with the rest of the community, so that people and schools can really promote health,” said Stephen Farrow, executive director of National Diabetes & Obesity. Research Institute.

“We really are all pulling in the same direction. It’s not just William Carey or community providers,” said David Buys, state health specialist for the Mississippi State University Extension Service. “It’s really just that we’re all in this together,”

Among those who could benefit the most from the summit are future doctors, like WCU student Andres Saucedo.

“It’s one thing to learn about it from books,” Saucedo said. “It’s another thing to hear practitioners (who) say, ‘These are the challenges we face in the community.'”
