Venus Williams discusses the importance of therapy and good mental health

Venus Williams stressed the importance of therapy as she thinks it is good to start working with a therapist even before facing certain life issues. “It’s important to commit to therapy before you even have something to say exactly, to work out, and to be prepared for anything that might come up in your life,” Williams told PEOPLE magazine.

Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, reveals her mother, Oracene Price, told her that working on her mental toughness could be key. “You don’t always have to wait until you have trouble,” added Williams.

“My mum always told us that you have to work on your mental toughness. That was her theory on raising children, you also have to help them mentally to be ready and prepared.” Williams and fellow American players Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe have joined forces with online counseling service BetterHelp to provide up to $3 million in free mental health therapy.

Williams, who knows the importance of good mental health, is happy to be part of such a good initiative.

Williams to help provide free mental health therapy

“I’m so excited to be a part of this and literally give people opportunities to work and improve their mental health,” Williams said.

Over the past year and a half, more and more players are openly discussing their mental health issues. In the world of tennis, Naomi Osaka was the first to speak about her story. Osaka’s case has inspired other athletes, not just tennis, to open up and share their experiences.

“We’re supposed to be indestructible, invincible, super strong, almost like superheroes. But having athletes share their stories about what they’ve been through really helps people from all walks of life, and that’s so important “Williams said.
