I went to the gym with a friend when I was 25 kg lighter and when I got on the treadmill I realized how much easier it was [movement] was, so I started training five or six days a week. I have a physical therapist who designs my program for me – it’s mostly weights and sometimes cardio.
He helped me learn what to do to not hurt myself and fall off the wagon, which was one of my fears. It has also helped me gain confidence and maintain my consistency – my goal is to feel healthy; it’s not so much what I look like.
So many things in my life have changed since I became healthier. Now I’m down to about 100kg, and I’m so much more comfortable [in my skin]. I am no longer depressed or anxious for my body. I feel better about myself and have become much more confident – my mum always says she’s proud of me.
I bought a mountain bike and went cycling in Thredbo last summer, and my friends and I hiked Mount Kosciuszko – two things I could never have done at my age.
But maybe what excites me the most is learning to snowboard and ski, which is something I’ve always wanted to do. My partner and I booked a six month working holiday in Canada, leaving in November. When he asked me, I jumped at the chance and thought, ‘Why not?’ It’s going to be amazing.”
