Mental Health Advocates Launch Registration Event for NAMI New Orleans Walk

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – The people of New Orleans are taking up a cause to end the stigma.

The local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, also known as NAMI, has launched registration for the NAMI Walks Your Way event taking place in November.

“We hope that this year we will come back to see what we saw three or four years ago in terms of hundreds and hundreds of people walking and hundreds and hundreds of people having invested in this process for us” , said Calvin Johnson, acting. Director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness of New Orleans.

NAMI, which focuses on providing resources for people with mental illness and educating the public about mental illness, hosted a kick-off party to begin raising funds for their annual walk. For Nancy Moore, a member of the NAMI board of directors, the subject of mental health touches us closely.

“My daughter was diagnosed with bipolar and borderline personality disorder and she suffered from substance abuse,” Moore said.

Since her daughter’s diagnosis, Moore has dedicated her life to helping others struggling with mental illness and ending the stigma that surrounds it.

“There’s no reason to be traumatized or ashamed if someone in your family has bipolar or schizophrenia. It’s a medical condition,” Moore said.

NAMI’s listing event took place just hours after New Orleans City Council members discussed creating a cultural grant to invest in mental health initiatives.

Councilman Joe Giarrusso, who shared a very personal story about his father’s death by suicide, pledged to invest $150,000 of that money in public schools and United Way.

The NAMI Walks Your Way event kicks off Saturday, November 5 at 10 a.m. at Armstrong Park.
