The Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics announced its first Beecher Teaching Awards, which recognize outstanding teaching in medical ethics at Harvard Medical School. An award recognizes professors who teach medical students in Harvard Medical School’s Medical Ethics and Professionalism program. The second award recognizes faculty who teach in the Master of Science in Bioethics program at the Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics. Both awards were given to faculty who have demonstrated excellence in teaching, as measured by student end-of-term evaluations.
The Laureate in Medical Ethics and Professionalism is KB Krishnamurthy, MD, MBE, (Inaugural Class Member HMS MBE). The students thanked Krishnamurthy for his expertise in facilitating discussions, despite the challenges of online teaching. They praised his recognition and thorough exploration of the nuances inherent in the ethical complexities of the practice of medicine.
The award for teaching in the Master of Science in Bioethics was awarded to Martha Montello, Ph.D., and Lisa Moses, VMD, alumnus of the HMS Center for Bioethics.
In a first for teaching evaluations at the center, Montello students requested that his course be both extended and made compulsory in the MBE programme. They thanked her for giving them a fuller and more complex understanding of bioethics.
Moses’ students have praised his teaching as compelling and masterful, particularly in fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment. They also appreciated his empathy and concern for them, as students and as people.
