Beloved UES Park Fitness Classes Relaunched After Surge in Demand

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — After the pandemic put it on hiatus, a series of popular senior fitness classes will soon return to Carl Schurz Park with funding from a neighborhood lawmaker.

Free yoga and walking classes for seniors will resume from September 1. 19, lasting eight weeks until November 1. On the 11th, Councilwoman Julie Menin said.

First launched more than a decade ago as part of a fitness program for seniors run by the City Parks Foundation, Carl Schurz’s classes were put on hold when COVID-19 hit – prompting ” many local seniors” to ask Menin to restart it, she said.

“These are great classes with good attendance,” wrote a senior in a request shared by the Menin office. “I had hoped that these courses would be renewed once the pandemic was under control, but to date they have not.”

The yoga classes will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., while the fitness walking program will take place on Mondays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

New Yorkers 60 and older are eligible and all equipment is provided by the organizers. People can register online for the fall 2022 season.

“I am so happy to bring back a program that has brought so much joy to our neighborhood seniors,” Menin said in a statement – noting that his Upper East Side district ranks 47th out of 51 citywide in terms of of park area and playground space, according to a 2015 study.

While the new funding only covers eight weeks of programming for this fall, Menin’s office will likely renew funding for another season next year given its popularity, a spokesperson said.

“I am thrilled to fund this fall programming in Carl Schurz Park to keep our seniors socially and physically active in our community,” Menin said.
