President Magill’s debut in the Phillies | Penn today

Moments before the Philadelphia Phillies take on the Washington Nationals in Saturday night’s home game at Citizens Bank Park, Penn President Liz Magill threw out a ceremonial first pitch.

The practice with Penn Baseball coach John Yurkow paid off as fans in the stands watched Magill throw directly at the Phillie Phanatic. Alongside her on the court were her husband Leon Szeptycki and Kevin Mahoney, chief executive of the University of Pennsylvania Health System.

As part of an employee engagement and experience initiative, Penn Medicine purchased blocks of tickets to several games this baseball season for healthcare system employees. At least 2,000 Penn Medicine employees were on hand Saturday to cheer on the Phillies and Penn’s new president, who took office in July. A special welcome video for Magill, produced by Penn Medicine, which featured employees from across the University, was shown on the jumbotron ahead of its launch.

Subsequently, Magill enjoyed playing with Mahoney and Perelman School of Medicine Dean J. Larry Jameson, as well as other clinical leaders in the health system. She also visited with extra staff, students and Penn alumni who came to have fun. The final score was 8-5, with a thrilling win for the Phillies on a perfect late summer night.
