Letter to the Editor: Health insurance needs reform

When my son was diagnosed with severe asthma, our main concern was having access to the right inhalers and the right medications. We had to make sure he was always ready in case of an attack. What we weren’t prepared for were the many challenges we would face from our insurer. On several occasions, our insurance refused the drugs that my son’s respiratory specialist prescribed. Although we were eventually able to get them to cover his inhaler, they now require that we have to go through the prior authorization process every year, which means my son could go weeks without his life-saving care. That’s not how insurance should work. We pay high monthly premiums and deductibles, and there’s still no guarantee that the medication my son needs to breathe will be fully covered, or even partially paid for. As a mother, all I should have to worry about is my son’s health and peace of mind knowing he has the treatments he needs to live a quality life. . I urge our elected leaders in Washington to focus on policies like insurance reforms, so families like mine can focus on what’s important and not waste time fighting for the care we should already have.
