Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, called on Ghanaians to use exercise as a tool to improve their efficiency and reduce their healthcare costs, especially in this time of austerity.
He also encouraged citizens to pay close attention to their health by exercising regularly.
The Vice President said this during the inaugural National Keep Fit Day at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday morning.
The drill is scheduled to take place every second Saturday of every month nationwide.
Thousands of health and fitness enthusiasts including Ga State King Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Sports Minister Mustapha Yusif, professional cyclists, football teams from some selected graduate schools in the Greater Accra region, former world champion Azuma Nelson and some politicians participated in the march.
Fitness enthusiasts did aerobics as they converged on the Accra Sports Stadium where dignitaries took turns to address the participants.
Le Ga Mantse, in a brief remark of admiration, said that “National Fitness Day has come to stay”.
Alhaji Haruna Abdulai, former NPP Northern Regional Secretary and consultant for the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation, hailed the promoters and organizers of the national fitness day.
”Keeping fit is good for keeping up, and as a financier, I know that staying fit will reduce the health budget and that alone will bring savings to people in terms of health costs,” said Alhaji Haruna.
On his part, the Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia, who led and declared National Fitness Day, also used the platform to call on the general population to use exercise as a means not only to reduce their medical bills individual, but also to improve efficiency in their respective places. or work.
“If we are physically healthy, we are mentally healthy, and so we want to make sure that Ghana is healthy, and national fitness day should help us develop our physical fitness and that means better productivity. for us,” he said.
The vice-president ended the day by trying out his favorite sport, table tennis.
