‘Lazy’ French teens run 1 mile from free fitness trackers

An attempt to get French teenagers moving more by giving them fitness trackers has sparked a storm of conspiracy theories claiming officials want to control their lives.

Thirty thousand made-in-China smart bracelets have been given to high school students in the Sarthe department as part of a nationwide campaign to persuade teenagers to engage in physical activity ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The council said the wristbands would provide data that could be used by physical education teachers to warn classes when they were too sedentary.

The data would then be collated and analyzed by the University of Le Mans to provide a snapshot of adolescent health. Officials said the results could also be used to organize competitions between schools to determine
