Detroit Tigers outfielder Austin Meadows will not play again in 2022 due to mental health issues, he announced Friday. Meadows hasn’t played since June 15 with an Achilles tendon injury, and he also battled vertigo earlier this year. He will stay with the club for the next few weeks but will not play.

Here is the statement Meadows released on Friday:

This season has been an unfortunate struggle with a series of injuries and illnesses, from being treated for dizziness at first, then COVID, to bilateral tendonitis in my Achilles, and then having to go through the rehab process each time.

What I’ve told very few people is that I’ve also had mental health issues in a way that has extended my time away from the game I love so much. I’ve dealt with this privately with a great team of professionals, but I have to keep working hard off the pitch to feel mentally healthy.

Although I have been back at the clubhouse for the past few weeks and plan to stay with the club until the end of the season, I am still not ready to return to the pitch. I am so grateful to my family, my teammates and the Tigers organization for supporting me through this ordeal. I can’t do it alone, and I hope that by sharing my experience, I can reach at least one person who might be going through their own struggles and encourage them to ask someone for help.

Acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in a three-way trade shortly before Opening Day, Meadows has struggled on the field despite being healthy this season, hitting .250/.347/.328 without a homer in 35 games. He hit 27 home runs a year ago and received a handful of MVP votes. The Tigers can keep Meadows as an arbitration-eligible player until 2024.

This season has been disappointing for the Tigers in general. Rather than relying on a solid finish that saw them go 68-61 in their last 129 games last year, they sit last at 50-81 and were one of the worst attacking teams in the game. .
