Delco sues Prospect Medical and Crozer Hospitals to keep behavioral health services open

Zabel credits the hard work of county officials to achieve this result. And while he said he now has “very cautious optimism” about the state of behavioral health services at Delco, he will remain vigilant.

“It’s definitely not bad news, but we’ve been burned by this kind of promise from Crozer, Prospect before,” Zabel said.

A Delaware County spokesperson responded to a WHYY News inquiry for comment with a statement.

“The County has proceeded on multiple avenues of identifying alternative providers of the services that Prospect-Crozer has threatened to terminate, continuing our negotiations with Prospect-Crozer, while also seeking an injunction to block its sudden closure decisions. Preliminary indications we have received that Prospect-Crozer canceled its service termination plans in mid-June prove to be accurate, we are satisfied with this and will continue to work to ensure essential services remain available to all county residents” the statement read.

Crozer CEO Kevin Spiegel told health system employees that the behavioral and mental health units will not close immediately in June, as originally planned, during a virtual meeting Wednesday afternoon.

In comments to Crozer workers, Spiegel said he made the decision to keep services open after meeting with county leaders and was “hopeful” they would provide funding for the health care system. , according to Peggy Malone, president of Crozer-Chester Nurses. Association (CCNA), one of the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals (PASNAP) union locals within the system.

“And he said Crozer was fine,” said Malone, who was listening in on the meeting by phone. “However, I continue to lose money, but I am improving every day and growing as an organization.”
